April Maxey is a Los Angeles based director, from San Antonio, Texas, by way of New York City. April’s short film Work, which she wrote and directed as a part of AFI’s DWW+ program, premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, and went on to screen at Tribeca, Palm Springs Shortfest, and Inside Out, and Outfest, where it won the Oscar-eligible Grand Jury Prize for Outstanding US Narrative Short. The feature screenplay for Work has been supported by a Sundance Uprise Grant and April and her producer Skylar Andrews were selected with the project for the 2022 WIF x Sundance Feature Financing Intensive. April is currently a 2023 Sundance x Adobe Women to Watch Fellow.

April is an alumna of the Berlinale Talents Short Film Station, and her short films have collectively screened at over 75 festivals in 18 countries and won 10 awards internationally. Her short film, After You Left won the Shorts Jury Prize at the Milwaukee Film Festival and has screened at Academy and BAFTA-Qualifying festivals such as Palm Springs Int’l Shortfest, Flickerfest, and HollyShorts. Her drama pilot screenplay for Work was a top 5 finalist in the New Orleans Film Festival Screenplay Competition. She was also a guest writer/director on the lesbian web series Same Same which premiered at Newfest in 2016.

April’s directing approach is informed by her years working as a cinematographer and editor. She is most interested in working on stories which center underrepresented perspectives and explore the complexities of queer intimacy, grief, healing, and belonging in a way that feels grounded and cathartic. As a director with a background in visual arts, she has a particular appreciation for the emotional impact of light and color. She holds a BFA in Film from Pratt Institute.
