April Maxey is a Los Angeles-based director, from San Antonio, Texas, by way of New York City. April’s short film Work, which she wrote and directed as a part of AFI’s DWW+ program, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to screen at Tribeca, Palm Springs Shortfest, and Inside Out, and Outfest, where it won the Oscar-eligible Grand Jury Prize for Outstanding US Narrative Short. In 2024 her feature screenplay for Work was selected for the NALIP Feature Media Accelerator, the Sundance x One House Development Grant, and Film Independent’s Fast Track finance market.

April has been a Sundance Uprise Fellow, a Sundance x Adobe Women to Watch Fellow, a WIF x Sundance Financing Intensive Fellow, and an alumna of the Berlinale Talents Short Film Station. Her short films have collectively screened at over 75 festivals in 18 countries and won 10 awards internationally.

April is most interested in working on stories that center underrepresented perspectives and explore the complexities of queer intimacy, grief, and healing. April’s directing approach is informed by her years working as a director of photography and editor. With a background in visual arts, she has a particular appreciation for the emotional impact of light and color. She holds a BFA in Film from Pratt Institute.
